When you enter a car dealership, you should be able to expect the very best in service; this fact rings true at Sansone Chrysler Jeep® Dodge RAM. Every day, we strive to fulfill all your automotive needs and share our vast trove of car-related knowledge. One piece of information that every driver should know is how to change a flat tire.

Your tire can burst when you least expect it. Tires can seem ever-durable, but a particularly deep pothole or a stray nail can put your tire out of commission in a second. Fortunately, you don’t have to accept being stranded on the side of the road.

Before you even pop a tire, you should be sure your vehicle is equipped with a car jack, a wrench/tire iron, an air pressure gauge, and an air compressor. When the worst-case scenario rears its head, pull over to a space that gives you enough room to change your tire safely.

Once there, start loosening the wheel lugs, and raise your car with the jack until the tire is no longer touching the ground. You then want to completely remove the lugs and free the flat tire.

With the busted tire off, it’s time to test the spare. Spare tires spend months if not years out of use, so there is no telling what the state of it is. Using your air pressure gauge, ensure that the level is at the recommended PSI. If not, you can use the air compressor to get it there.

Next, you want to line the spare tire with the wheel studs and place it on. Take the tire iron and screw the wheel lugs back into place. With the spare properly inflated and installed on your vehicle, it’s time to find a professional who can outfit your vehicle with a fresh tire.
